′The Jackal is Coming′ Lands in Theaters in Japan and Sells Out Tickets

JYJ Kim Jae Joong and Song Ji Hyo′s The Jackal is Coming has been selling out in theaters across Japan.

On May 3, The Jackal is Coming premiered in Japan under the title Code Name: Jackal. On its first day the movie managed to sell out in theaters not only in Roppongi at Tokyo′s center, but also across the country.

Its success was fairly predictable as the 20,000 tickets made available in pre-sales in February were sold out as soon as they were made available, and the behind-the-scenes DVD topped the Oricon chart as soon as it was released.

On May 5 a Japanese media outlet said about the movie in an article titled ′Movies That Will Blow Away Your May Virus′, “This is a movie we recommend to those who have the ′May virus′; in other words, those who don’t want to go to work after Golden Week (a week of holidays lasting from late April to early May).”

Another outlet gave a new name to Kim Jae Joong′s economic value, calling it ′Jae Joong-nomics′.

The Jackal is Coming is about what happens after the legendary killer Bong Min Jung (Song Ji Hyo) kidnaps the country′s biggest top star Choi Hyun (Kim Jae Joong).

JYJ’s popularity in Japan continues.

After gathering 150,000 people in Tokyo Dome last month, Park Yuchun’s, ‘Rooftop Prince’ started airing and Kim Jaejoong’s movie, Jackal is coming (Japan title - Code Name: Jackal), has been receiving hot attention even before its release, proving JYJ’s popularity in Japan.

C-JeS entertainment said, “DATV started broadcasting Rooftop Prince in April and the drama has swept the Korean drama DVD rental chart. In addition, in a survey conducted by Yahoo Japan, Kim Jaejoong’s movie Jackal is coming is the most anticipated film with a nearly overwhelming response of 96%.”

Related to DVD movies, “Park Yuchun ranked 1 to 5 in Tsutaya’s Korean Drama DVD rental, and Kim Jaejoong’s DVD is currently ranking on Oricon, Amazon, HMV charts, proving how highly popular they are in Japan.”

In addition, a Rooftop Prince cafe was opened to celebrate the success of the drama. The menu includes the omurice and yogurt drink that can be seen in the drama and both are very popular with the fans going to the cafe.

Due to the explosive popularity of the DVD making, Japanese local media has coined the term Jejunomics/Jaejoonomics (Jaejoong + Economics) which means ‘Kim Jaeoong’s economic value.’

After the legal dispute finished and JYJ had successful Tokyo Dome concerts, their popularity is still increasing. Kim Junsu’s english single, Uncommitted, which was released last year, has ranked high in the Amazon chart. JYJ’s music, their participation in dramas, movies, and musicals all play an active part in their popularity.

Ultimate K-pop Survival Guide: JYJ

K-pop is an extremely competitive genre, a small country with a population of merely 50 million people produces new artists literally almost every day. The industry is like a ruthless stepmother: once you make a serious mistake, it might cost you your career and more. Career ups and downs are normal in an artist’s life but in K-pop, once you reached the lowest part, it is very difficult to climb up the mountain again. Ultimate K-pop Survival Guide will be a short series on artists who have managed to turn their failing career from point zero back again or who had gone through a lot of hardships and still managed to remain successful. Not only rookie artists but we, the audience, can also learn a lot from them.

Avoid them as if they were lepers

The first installment of the series is dedicated to perhaps the biggest survivors of the dark side of K-pop: JYJ. Everyone knows what they have been through, but it doesn’t hurt to summarize and focus on how they actually managed to cope with the situation.

For the uninitiated: Once there had been an idol band we can possibly call one of the greatest successes of K-pop ever: Dong Bang Shin Ki, or by their English abbreviation, TVXQ. The five-member boyband, consisting of Jaejoong, Yunho, Yoochun, Junsu and Changmin, was among the first successful wave of K-pop to set foot in Japan, and with blood and tears, they worked their way up the ladder, from performing to a mere handful of fans to filling the 50,000 seat Tokyo Dome in rows. Their fandom, Cassiopeia, was certified by the Guinness Book of Records for being the largest official fan club in the world. They reached unimaginable heights in Asia, thus their break-up was probably one of the biggest shocking events ever to shake the world of K-pop. Not because boybands are supposed to last forever, but because they were at the height of their careers and were known to be close to each other. When the news broke out that Jaejoong, Yoochun and Junsu started a lawsuit against their agency S.M. Entertainment, to nullify their 13-year contract, at first everyone hoped there could be a settlement but in October 2009 the Seoul court ruled in favour of JYJ, and as a result, the Fair Trade Commission started advocating the use of ‘model contracts’ to prevent agencies from having artists sign excessive deals.

Though the social impact of their lawsuit was huge, industry players were forced to rethink the ways they were treating their artists, and JYJ emerged as a moral winner, the real hardships were to begin just then. S.M. Entertainment appealed against the court decision and a three year desperate battle took off. Not long after JYJ announced the establishment of their new band, their initial supporter in Japan, Avex, suddenly had a change of heart, claiming sole rights to manage the band in Japan, dismissing claims that JYJ’s new management company, C-JeS Entertainment, had any rights to organize events for the band on Japanese grounds. They too, ended up in a long lawsuit, during which JYJ was denied any kind of rights to perform in Japan. At the same time, all doors in Korea closed as well. The industry suddenly started treating the three young men as if they had leprosy. In silent agreement, major broadcasting stations denied them appearances as musicians. Some were claiming that they did not wish to get entangled in court related issues.

“At the time, we had no one to speak for us, and we could do nothing but silently stand our ground” - Kim Jaejoong

C-JeS Entertainment thus had to build a different strategy to promote JYJ. With no possibilities to appear on televised music shows and variety programs, the usual promotion cycle was out of question. The possibility of failure also lingered in the air, with the artists preparing themselves for the worst: that they might not be able to stand on stage again.

The rules of survival for JYJ were as follows:

1. Keep silent.
Despite the constant rumours, the extensive media coverage, part of the torn fandom accusing them of betrayal, former label mates openly criticising them for their decision, JYJ kept silent. As they expressed in their 1000 day anniversary magazine, they decided to work silently and not be shaken by accusations and rumours.

2. If you cannot enter through the door, climb through the window. As they were denied the chance to promote through television, JYJ had to look for other ways of reaching their audience. They started separate activities, Yoochun and Jaejoong became involved in television dramas and movies, gaining wide followings as actors. Junsu began to appear in musicals and in a mere three years’ time, he went from being looked at as a ‘box office bringing tool’ to a highly praised and critically acclaimed musical actor on his own right. When the nation’s main broadcasters were not willing to talk to them as musicians, ironically, they became the sweethearts of the government, appointed as goodwill ambassadors and promoters of national and international scale events like the 2014 Asian Games, and were among the few selected artists invited to perform at President Park Geun-hye’s inauguration. The latter marked their first televised performance in three years in their home country. When local record labels were unwilling to assist, they went to the US and started working with American producers, despite their lack of English skills.

3. No regrets, no complaints.
In their 1000 day anniversary magazine, the band members expressed that despite all the hardships they did not regret their decision, not once. Having faith in your decisions is important for obtaining and maintaining the strength necessary to survive. They have also never complained of unfair treatment or the lack of opportunities because of the silent ban in Korea and Japan. They just did what they had to do: work hard and smile. I believe that having a positive attitude and being able to smile at their fans was an important factor in their success. Instead of giving in to striking waves of depression and self-pity, they rose above hard times by sticking together and supporting each other.

4. Don’t lose your trust. When unfortunate events happen, one can easily feel they are no longer able to trust other people. JYJ, too, had gone through this period. When Baek Chang-ju offered his help in 2009, they did not trust him, it took them months to open up and accept his helping hand. C-JeS Entertainment was established exclusively to steer JYJ’s boat through troubled waters and it went from a one person venture to a serious agency that employs over 40 people with sales amounting to 33 billion won (roughly 30 million USD) in only two years’ time.

JYJ’s legal fights have just recently ended, but their battle is far from being over yet. Broadcasting stations are still treading carefully. Despite all the unfortunate events that had befallen them (appearances denied, concerts cancelled last minute, accusations, rumors, some of their own fans turning their backs on the band), JYJ never once gave up.

Their album, In Heaven, sold over 350,000 copies, Junsu’s Tarantallegra was one of the most successful solo albums of 2012 despite lacking in promotion, both JYJ’s and Junsu’s solo world tours were completely sold out. Their Tokyo Dome comeback concert in April this year had attracted 210,000 people altogether.

Besides part of the Cassiopeia fandom still supporting them as much as they support the duo TVXQ, JYJ gained a firm and enthusiastic new fan base as well, through their group and individual activities. Jaejoong’s limited edition mini album became a huge success, Yoochun is virtually the most successful idol actor on the market and Junsu cemented his name as one of the best singers ever born in Korea. They are wealthier than most artists under their former agency, including their former band members Yunho and Changmin.

Were they lucky? I would not think so. Many of us would have given up such a grueling and frankly, seemingly hopeless battle against giant obstacles. What we can learn from JYJ is that you need to keep your faith, grind your teeth, work hard and believe in your own abilities. Only then will you be able to turn all unfortunate events into glistening success.

[Tokyo Dome Concert Review] JYJ’s strength that pierced 24,552 hours

[Tokyo Dome Concert Review] JYJ’s strength that pierced 24,552 hours

APR 05, 2013

http://billboard.co.kr/v1/news_view.html?t=3&i=34464

[Billboard Korea Tokyo = Eun Ju Kim] ‘ずっと 一緒に’ (Be together for a long time/ Together Forever)

50,000 white banners were fluttering between red lights. The welcome messages to greet JYJ who came back to Tokyo Dome in three years fluttered like blooming cherry blossoms around the centre of Japan. When the number 24,552 appeared on the screen, JYJ came out.

JYJ stood at Tokyo Dome - the stage of dreams – again. It’s the group’s 4th year and 24,552 hours have passed since they left the same stage. It was caused by the long aftermath of the legal disputes. JYJ made a contract with AVEX in 2010 while it was having a lawsuit with SM Entertainment, the former management, but also faced another lawsuit after both parties had conflicts in the range of the group’s activities. The seemed-to-be-endless lawsuits lasted 3 years. The group finally won the lawsuit to clarify invalidity of exclusive contact and demand compensation for damage against AVEX. About $7.8 billion Won was also ruled as the compensation.

Tokyo Dome, JYJ’s comeback stage, is a special place for the group. The venue is only available for top artists in Japan and the three hit the stage as the first Korean singers at Tokyo Dome when they were TVXQ. June 2010, they burst into tears at the same place as JYJ. As soon as the group finished the lawsuit against AVEX, JYJ chose Tokyo Dome for its comeback. The dome that is big enough to have 50,000 people was rented for 3 days in a row. It was not even weekend schedules. The decision based on confidence from stable popularity was bold as presents/gifts for fans who were waiting for the group. JYJ became 15 times more of a popular group compared to their first live tour in Japan ‘Heart, Mind and Soul’ in MAY 2006 which drew 15,000 audience in 7 cities.

The president (Mr. Okamoto) of Kyodo Yokohama, the Japanese production company of the Tokyo Dome Concert this time, said, “Drawing 150,000 people at once tells us that JYJ’s power hasn’t changed. The scale of the concert can be compared to Michael Jackson and JYJ’s group dance became more brilliant.”

Mr. Miura of Dentsu Music Entertainment also analyzed the secret of JYJ’s Tokyo Dome having sold out as ‘Artist Power’. “Making all seats sold out right after the sales began just proves the unimaginably great power. I think JYJ has something that draws peoples’ hearts,” he added.

JYJ also proved it on the stage too. The title of the album in 2011, ‘In Heaven’, and ‘Boy’s Letter’ written for fans along with ‘Rainy Blue’ from the past Japanese song which they also did as TVXQ, all delivered fantastic harmony with the group’s 10th year since debut.

The long 3-years gap could not catch up with JYJ. A long wait made the group mature, the blocking in Japan opened the new bridge to Asia, Europe and others. As if an eagle earning his wings, JYJ drew 210,000 people in 15 cities including Europe, South and North America, with JYJ World Tour in 2011-2012. Then became the first Korean male artist who had solo concerts in Spain, Germany, Chile and Peru.

As individuals, the time made all three members ensure personal improvement. Kim Junsu released his first solo album, ‘Tarantallegra’ in MAY last year and successfully finished a world tour in Asian countries and in North/South America as the first solo male singer in each country. Kim Jaejoong also sold 140,000 copies(management’s count) of his first mini album and released re-package album ‘Y’ too. Park Yuchun was outstanding in the Drama field. KBS, ‘SKK Scandal’ as his first step, followed by MBC ‘Miss Ripley(2011), SBS ‘Rooftop Prince(2012), and MBC ‘I Miss You(2013) all resulting in good success.

Ms. Eriko who we met at the dome told us that, “JYJ understands the meaning of the Japanese language really well and sing right with sympathy. It’s completely different to other ordinary K-POP singers who just memorize and sing the lyrics [without true understanding]. Above all, they sing really well and I like the talent that the three members have.”

The close friendship also gave strength to endure obstructions. “When we look back on the past 1,000 days, there were tough times but we were happy. There also were unexpected difficulties but we were able to learn more and grow up. We’ll keep running as much as the fans like the way we try hard.” Yuchun also added that “Our goal is to have activities together for a long time rather than making money and popularity. I want to sing when I’m old”. Jaejoong said to the fans before ‘Fallen Leaves’ that “It was so hard to come to Tokyo Dome and I believe there’ll be good days from now. We’ll do our best with your faith supporting us in a far distance.”

The last day of JYJ’s Tokyo Dome concert with 26 songs was also shown at cinemas in Japan too. 300,000 people applied for 150,000 tickets so a special place was made for the fans who couldn’t come. 113 screens at cinemas in Japan including Toho cinemas and Warner Cinemas provided the concerts too. 60,000 tickets were sold out and 10,000 more tickets were added.

Japanese Officials Compare ′I Miss You′ to ′Winter Sonata′

I Miss You has just started airing in Japan, but already its popularity is being compared to the Winter Sonata boom that swept the country.

A drama official recently told enews, "Reactions are so explosive that some Japanese officials have been saying I Miss You may become the next Winter Sonata."

I Miss You is currently airing in the hallyu channel DATV, and will soon also start airing in a main channel. This is a surprising feat considering how Japan has been cutting down on Korean content on its main channels following the two countries′ political strifes.

Winter Sonata also initially aired on cable, and after gaining popularity, made it into the government-run broadcasting station NHK to cause a great boom across the country.

The official quoted a local official to have said that "if I Miss You starts airing on a main channel, it will go the way of Winter Sonata."

"Park Yoo Chun is very popular in Japan, and Yoo Seung Ho has also been gaining popularity as the next generation hallyu star, while Yun Eun Hye is known through her role in Coffee Prince. Hallyu fans have especially been showing great interest," the official added.

"I Miss You has even been receiving love calls from America and Europe," the official said. "Park Yoo Chun′s popularity overseas is unimaginably great. We′re first preparing to go to America."

I Miss You is a romance that stars Park Yoo Chun, Yun Eun Hye and Yoo Seung Ho.

[Concert Review] JYJ′s Kim Jae Joong Heats Up Nanjing with Solo Tour Concert

Kim Jae Joong has been leaving behind a trail of fire in his wake, as he tours Asia for his tour.

So far, he has been through Thailand, Shanghai and Hong Kong, and most recently he landed in Nanjing for another performance.

The singer met with 4,000 fans in Nanjing on April 6. Though the Your, My and Mine in Nanjing performance was held just a few days after his Tokyo Dome performance as JYJ, which took place from April 2-4, he still managed to deliver his best and leave behind unforgettable memories.

Fans shouted out his name even before the concert was to start, and as soon as he appeared, they exploded in excitement.

During the mini talk session, quiz show and speed quiz events, Kim Jae Joong answered questions directly from his fans.

At a question asking when he plans to get married, he answered, "When I′m about 38," and when asked how he feels about women who are heavier than him, he answered, "I like plump women more than skinny ones."

In the cooking section, Kim Jae Joong cooked rappokki, singing the giyomi song and a track titled Kiss B from the repackaged version of his album, while for the last paparazzi section, he released photos showing him in cute poses to cheers from his fans.

The mini concert showed Kim Jae Joong as a true rocker. He first started off with One Kiss, then went on to sing songs by his senior singers, such as Though I Loved You, For You and I Always Miss You, in rock versions. As he sang I′ll Protect You, Nanjing fans even sang along in perfect Korean.

Even while he sang in his charismatic rocker self, he still didn′t lose his gentle side.

When fans asked, "Aren′t you tired because it hasn′t been long since your concert in Japan? How would you like fans in Nanjing to show support for you?" he answered, "I don′t have any specific wish on what kind of support I want to see. I just want all of you to stay safe. I′m always thankful."

Kim Jae Joong will next go on to hold his concert in Taiwan on April 13.

Junsu’s $13.5 million investment in hotel on Jeju Island nearing completion

JYJ‘s Junsu hotel resort on Jeju Island is nearing completion.

Back in 2011, he received permission to build the hotel in Gangjeong-dong, Seogwipo-si. The hotel will be named ‘Jeju Toscana Family Hotel’, and Junsu’s father will be in charge of managing the hotel. Most of the hotel is already completed, and on March 23, they held a semi-opening which Junsu attended.

The original plans for the hotel were for it to encompass 76,780 square feet but they decided to expand it further to 87,768 square feet. The hotel is four stories high and also has a basement level. It’s reported that Junsu invested around 15 billion KRW (approximately $13,500,000 USD) of his own money into the hotel.

A real estate representative thought it was advantageous to have a big name attached to the hotel, stating, “Since the Hallyu idol Junsu is connected to the hotel, if JYJ holds any of their events at the hotel, tourism will naturally rise. Then, the surrounding businesses will be vitalized, and he’ll help spread the name of the city.”

JYJ Enters Japan for Tokyo Dome Concert

JYJ was sent off and welcomed by a big crowd of fans in Korea and Japan.

JYJ′s Park Yoo Chun, Kim Jae Joong and Kim Junsu left for Japan through Kimpo Airport in Seoul on March 27, a few days before its historical Tokyo Dome concert was to take place.

500 fans said goodbye to JYJ in Korea, and over 1,000 local fans welcomed the group to Japan at Haneda Airport.

An agency rep said, “We had to clear benches and set up a safeline for the fans who were crowding the airport after hearing the group would arrive in Japan. This is a very rare sight to see even in Japan, and it proved how popular the group is in the country.”

JYJ′s Tokyo Dome concert will take place from April 2-4, and is the group′s first in Japan since June 2010. All tickets sold out, with over three times the number of people allowed in the venue applying for tickets.
