Ultimate K-pop Survival Guide: JYJ

K-pop is an extremely competitive genre, a small country with a population of merely 50 million people produces new artists literally almost every day. The industry is like a ruthless stepmother: once you make a serious mistake, it might cost you your career and more. Career ups and downs are normal in an artist’s life but in K-pop, once you reached the lowest part, it is very difficult to climb up the mountain again. Ultimate K-pop Survival Guide will be a short series on artists who have managed to turn their failing career from point zero back again or who had gone through a lot of hardships and still managed to remain successful. Not only rookie artists but we, the audience, can also learn a lot from them.

Avoid them as if they were lepers

The first installment of the series is dedicated to perhaps the biggest survivors of the dark side of K-pop: JYJ. Everyone knows what they have been through, but it doesn’t hurt to summarize and focus on how they actually managed to cope with the situation.

For the uninitiated: Once there had been an idol band we can possibly call one of the greatest successes of K-pop ever: Dong Bang Shin Ki, or by their English abbreviation, TVXQ. The five-member boyband, consisting of Jaejoong, Yunho, Yoochun, Junsu and Changmin, was among the first successful wave of K-pop to set foot in Japan, and with blood and tears, they worked their way up the ladder, from performing to a mere handful of fans to filling the 50,000 seat Tokyo Dome in rows. Their fandom, Cassiopeia, was certified by the Guinness Book of Records for being the largest official fan club in the world. They reached unimaginable heights in Asia, thus their break-up was probably one of the biggest shocking events ever to shake the world of K-pop. Not because boybands are supposed to last forever, but because they were at the height of their careers and were known to be close to each other. When the news broke out that Jaejoong, Yoochun and Junsu started a lawsuit against their agency S.M. Entertainment, to nullify their 13-year contract, at first everyone hoped there could be a settlement but in October 2009 the Seoul court ruled in favour of JYJ, and as a result, the Fair Trade Commission started advocating the use of ‘model contracts’ to prevent agencies from having artists sign excessive deals.

Though the social impact of their lawsuit was huge, industry players were forced to rethink the ways they were treating their artists, and JYJ emerged as a moral winner, the real hardships were to begin just then. S.M. Entertainment appealed against the court decision and a three year desperate battle took off. Not long after JYJ announced the establishment of their new band, their initial supporter in Japan, Avex, suddenly had a change of heart, claiming sole rights to manage the band in Japan, dismissing claims that JYJ’s new management company, C-JeS Entertainment, had any rights to organize events for the band on Japanese grounds. They too, ended up in a long lawsuit, during which JYJ was denied any kind of rights to perform in Japan. At the same time, all doors in Korea closed as well. The industry suddenly started treating the three young men as if they had leprosy. In silent agreement, major broadcasting stations denied them appearances as musicians. Some were claiming that they did not wish to get entangled in court related issues.

“At the time, we had no one to speak for us, and we could do nothing but silently stand our ground” - Kim Jaejoong

C-JeS Entertainment thus had to build a different strategy to promote JYJ. With no possibilities to appear on televised music shows and variety programs, the usual promotion cycle was out of question. The possibility of failure also lingered in the air, with the artists preparing themselves for the worst: that they might not be able to stand on stage again.

The rules of survival for JYJ were as follows:

1. Keep silent.
Despite the constant rumours, the extensive media coverage, part of the torn fandom accusing them of betrayal, former label mates openly criticising them for their decision, JYJ kept silent. As they expressed in their 1000 day anniversary magazine, they decided to work silently and not be shaken by accusations and rumours.

2. If you cannot enter through the door, climb through the window. As they were denied the chance to promote through television, JYJ had to look for other ways of reaching their audience. They started separate activities, Yoochun and Jaejoong became involved in television dramas and movies, gaining wide followings as actors. Junsu began to appear in musicals and in a mere three years’ time, he went from being looked at as a ‘box office bringing tool’ to a highly praised and critically acclaimed musical actor on his own right. When the nation’s main broadcasters were not willing to talk to them as musicians, ironically, they became the sweethearts of the government, appointed as goodwill ambassadors and promoters of national and international scale events like the 2014 Asian Games, and were among the few selected artists invited to perform at President Park Geun-hye’s inauguration. The latter marked their first televised performance in three years in their home country. When local record labels were unwilling to assist, they went to the US and started working with American producers, despite their lack of English skills.

3. No regrets, no complaints.
In their 1000 day anniversary magazine, the band members expressed that despite all the hardships they did not regret their decision, not once. Having faith in your decisions is important for obtaining and maintaining the strength necessary to survive. They have also never complained of unfair treatment or the lack of opportunities because of the silent ban in Korea and Japan. They just did what they had to do: work hard and smile. I believe that having a positive attitude and being able to smile at their fans was an important factor in their success. Instead of giving in to striking waves of depression and self-pity, they rose above hard times by sticking together and supporting each other.

4. Don’t lose your trust. When unfortunate events happen, one can easily feel they are no longer able to trust other people. JYJ, too, had gone through this period. When Baek Chang-ju offered his help in 2009, they did not trust him, it took them months to open up and accept his helping hand. C-JeS Entertainment was established exclusively to steer JYJ’s boat through troubled waters and it went from a one person venture to a serious agency that employs over 40 people with sales amounting to 33 billion won (roughly 30 million USD) in only two years’ time.

JYJ’s legal fights have just recently ended, but their battle is far from being over yet. Broadcasting stations are still treading carefully. Despite all the unfortunate events that had befallen them (appearances denied, concerts cancelled last minute, accusations, rumors, some of their own fans turning their backs on the band), JYJ never once gave up.

Their album, In Heaven, sold over 350,000 copies, Junsu’s Tarantallegra was one of the most successful solo albums of 2012 despite lacking in promotion, both JYJ’s and Junsu’s solo world tours were completely sold out. Their Tokyo Dome comeback concert in April this year had attracted 210,000 people altogether.

Besides part of the Cassiopeia fandom still supporting them as much as they support the duo TVXQ, JYJ gained a firm and enthusiastic new fan base as well, through their group and individual activities. Jaejoong’s limited edition mini album became a huge success, Yoochun is virtually the most successful idol actor on the market and Junsu cemented his name as one of the best singers ever born in Korea. They are wealthier than most artists under their former agency, including their former band members Yunho and Changmin.

Were they lucky? I would not think so. Many of us would have given up such a grueling and frankly, seemingly hopeless battle against giant obstacles. What we can learn from JYJ is that you need to keep your faith, grind your teeth, work hard and believe in your own abilities. Only then will you be able to turn all unfortunate events into glistening success.

JYJ Magazine: Junsu - the next 1000 days

Spending 1000 days with the fans in the name of JYJ is not a short time for the members. Junsu’s planning of the next 1000 days is taking form.

Junsu said, “In the next 1000 days, I hope to repay fans for all the love received in the past. With that, it is a promise that we will be more active as singers. Hopefully, we can work on the production of a worldwide album in the US next year. Whether it is successful or not, we will have activities with no regrets. Even though the past 1000 days had been tough, we will do better in the next 1000 days, hoping to experience this world with the members and fans.”

JYJ Magazine: The Story of 1000 Days – Park Yuchun: Casting Away a Fixed Image…”Missing You”

Having dipped into all types of dramas like historical drama, love and comedy, Park Yuchun again challenged a love drama. In MBC drama ‘Missing You’ that started airing on 7 Nov 2012, he acted as Han Jung Woo who exudes valiant masculinity. Putting aside the actor’s standpoint, as viewers, the expectations were also great. With this work, he would transform once again.

“After ‘Rooftop Prince’ ended, I considered what it would be like to cast off the existing image, then Han Jung Woo appeared. Read the script, my heart was stirred, I felt that with just this role, I could do a 180 degree transformation, the chance to change my role has finally come. Although the heart-stirring feeling and a feeling of burden rushed in at the same time, this role was totally different from my previous roles, and I also had the confidence that I could act it sufficiently well.”

Park Yuchun’s worries about acting are now more specific. By chance, he read the news of the interview of actress Jeon Do Yeon, and his passion for acting became even hotter.

“In Jeon Do Yeon sunbae’s (senior) interview, she mentioned Ha Jung Woo sunbae, saying that she never thought he would stand firm as an actor so quickly. This is a statement that contains many thoughts. How does Ha Jung Woo sunbae differ from me, that he could stand firm as an actor in one go? Seeing a person with good acting skills, I can only admire. How to act that way, how to grasp that kind of feeling….. really very envious, really very cool. I think that, as an actor, if you don’t miss out on your own journey of growth, the radiance will not fade. Even if you gathered dust, just shake it off, stride and walk forward , then you will be able to stand in front of everyone with better acting, isn’t it?”

He himself is very strict towards ‘Park Yuchun the actor’, but he is definitely the acting talent that is currently receiving the most attention. In fact, he was also once in the casting selection for some work that had explosive reverberation.

“If the work that I did not choose becomes successful, I will think ‘this is really not mine’. ‘If I acted in it, it may not have that kind of popularity.’ This is how I myself think through it. Of course, I also resolve to find better works.”

JYJ Magazine: The Story of 1000 Days – Park Yuchun: Returning with “Rooftop Prince”

“Miss Ripley” was just one test; after experiencing trials, Park Yuchun set out with a new challenge in March 2012, through SBS “Rooftop Prince”, he showed his comic acting.

Having started his acting with a historical drama, Park Yuchun in “Rooftop Prince” acted as ‘Lee Gak’, the main lead who adds comic elements in a fantasy historical drama. Through Lee Gak, Park Yuchun’s true value totally shone forth. With just 3 works, he consolidated his status as an actor and also gained fame as a true and worthy lead actor. Park Yuchun did not have any greed, his only aim was to ‘enjoy doing it’, and thus only focused on the role.

“I totally let myself go. Just simply thinking about Lee Gak, and that’s why I was able to act. I did not think about how to make myself look good, just focused on Lee Gak. Instead there were scenes that were edited away because my expression was too realistic.”

At the shoot, he no longer shrunk back. If he had parts that he did not understand, he actively asked questions to seek acting solutions. “Acting in this drama, I naturally merged into the scene. In the past, I used to be anxious, now not anymore. If I didn’t know what kind of feeling is a better interpretation, I would ask without any hesitation.”

It seems that through “Rooftop Prince”, he has only now become a true actor.

The place where I understood the joy of acting

While infusing life into the character of Lee Gak, he also felt a burning passion for acting, and improvisations came often. The shoot was hard and continuous, but because he had savoured the taste of acting, he could enjoy amidst that.

“In the drama ‘The Greatest Love’, Cha Seung Won sunbae (senior) had a word, ‘overcome’ (T/N: or ‘conquer’). I think this was not in the script and I was very curious how Cha Seung Won sunbae came up with it. I merged into my character, immersed into the shoot, followed my heart, and then I could expend my acting. At that time, I felt this must be how Cha Seung Won sunbae did it. In the past, I only looked at the script; now I myself can add meaningful, interesting bits to the script, and this added to the joy of acting.

The good cooperation between actors was even more exciting. If the shoot was delayed, the co-actors and I would go and eat hot pot and have a drink. Filming with Jung Suk Won, Lee Min Ho and Choi Woo Shik, we couldn’t help but laugh. Acting with the group of 3, they would come prepared, I only needed to focus on the parts that I’m responsible for and do my best. There was very good rapport among the actors and we enjoyed ourselves during the shoot.” He recalled those times.

JYJ Magazine: The Story of 1000 Days – Park Yuchun: “Miss Ripley” Met Song Yoo Hyun

Park Yuchun achieved success through “Sungkyunkwan Scandal” and appeared in a traditional love drama. MBC TV drama “Miss Ripley” aired in May 2011 was his stage.

Talking about “Miss Ripley”, the first thing that Park Yuchun said was “a sense of burden”. Not sure exactly when but this sense of burden grew bigger and bigger due to pressure and anxiety.

Because this is the second work after the announcement of the birth of a new actor with “Sungkyunkwan Scandal”, Park Yuchun continuously dwelled on “the obsession of must do well” and “breaking through (self) limits”.

In addition, to merge himself into the role of the perfect man Song Yoo Hyun in whom no flaws can be found, he felt difficulties.

“Foreign language, sports, piano, etc all have to be displayed perfectly, that sense of burden was very big. The imperfect me, having to act as the perfect man, it was naturally followed by difficulties. Because of the doubt ‘Can I show the perfect Song Yoo Hyun that the scriptwriter has in mind?’, at the beginning I was very troubled by the embodiment of this character.

Abandoned the sense of burden, throwing in passion again

Heavy rainstorms causing the shoot to be delayed and other external factors also caused Yuchun to feel strained. It was also generated by his own self-expectations.

“Due to the success of the first work, there was an excessive desire to do even better, causing myself to be oppressed. Although I am saying it now, I cannot understand why I had to carry such a heavy rock at that time.”
Plus the fact that there were many senior actors, it was possible that he was already disheartened at the start.

In addition, there were many times that environmental factors at the scene broke the emotional balance. So not because of long hours of filming or tiring overnight shoots, but it was a work that was full of expectations but it kept getting broken, that kind of sadness was worse.

But as an actor, working with veteran actors, he gained many new realisations.

“To be able to work with senior Jang Yong (as Yoo Hyun’s father) and senior Choi Myung Gil (as Yoo Hyun’s step-mother), I was very happy. At the start, I was a bit afraid. But the reality was completely different. From that time on, I got the feeling that now I am really acting. After the shoot was finished, I even suggested to my teachers (T/N referring to the veteran actors) to have a meal together, I was very grateful to them,” he relayed his gratitude.

Strength from the fans was also great.

“It was different from “Sungkyunkwan Scandal”, probably because “Miss Ripley” is a serious drama, the immediate response was less. But each time an episode was over, fans would upload their thoughts and feelings with much sincerity, giving me support.” He did not forget his gratitude to his fans.

What “Miss Ripley” left behind

Through “Miss Ripley”, Park Yuchun showed a more matured side of himself as an actor. “Although there was a lot of screen time, it seems I was not able to convey completely the story of Yoo Hyun’s heart. It looked like he was a person that was being moved along, but actually he is a proactive character. During role analysis, even when succeeding his father’s business, he is a proactive person. Therefore, when the lies of the woman he loves are exposed, it’s clear that he should have been more proactive to solve it.” He told us his own explanation of the role.

For the scene that left the strongest impression, he chose the scene where Yoo Hyun told Miri he already knew all the lies much earlier and was only pretending not to know. He said, “At that time, the long script of 7 or 8 pages was especially easy to memorise. Seems like it was also a very satisfying scene for viewers, probably because it resolved a lot of uncertainties.”

Through this drama, Park Yuchun also developed the ability to grasp the main points of the scene.

“Now when I receive the script, the main points will leap out at me. That kind of scene needs practice or confirmation beforehand etc, I will think through it properly; and I also know how to adjust my feelings in advance.

Another big topic of discussion that Miss Ripley left behind is that Park Yuchun sang the drama OST “The Empty Space For You”. When it was released at that time, it swept all the OST charts and became the most loved OST in Asia. “This song, Junsu also likes very much. Both the lyrics and the melody, (we) like very much.” (T/N There is no subject here, so from the context, “we” is assumed.)

Although there were lots of times he felt troubled from the time he decided to act in it and the preparation, now looking back, Park Yuchun wants to remember them all as good memories, and he will not forget the lessons learned on the difficult journey, once again flashing his bright, cheerful smile.

Jaejoong Excerpt [5]: The JYJ Magazine, Story of 1000 Days

Transcript:

Tokyo Dome

The summer of 2010, the three members started their Dome live tour. Until the last concert in Tokyo Dome, they gathered about 100,000 audiences and successfully finished the concert. However, they didn't think, even in their dreams, that this concert in Tokyo Dome would be their last activity in Japan. Avex, the agency in Japan, had unilaterally announced the suspension of their activities.

Standing on the stage of Tokyo Dome, the members and their tears didn't stop. All kinds of bitterness and the gratitude toward the fans, the gratitude of being able to be together with the members, all crowded at once. Kim Jaejoong described it as, "the feeling of a deep lump in my heart being unwound."

"I really felt sorry toward our fans. I felt even more sorry that I couldn't tell them the truth, that we 5 people couldn't be together anymore. My tears came out uncontrollably. I can't forget that moment even now. I sang with such gratitude and sorry feelings, but how could it be our last... I often tweet in Japanese because I know that many fans are waiting for us in Japan. Now, I can't ask them to wait any longer because I feel so sorry. But I always want to meet them." (Kim Jaejoong)

Park Yuchun said, "It was the 1st stage of us as three. As soon as we appeared on stage, the fans' shouting was enormous. We were deeply moved and we also cried. I don't clearly remember how we could manage to sing. As the shouting became louder, it felt even sadder and everything went insane. Just the fact that we three could stand on stage again, could hold the microphone again, was already so touching. We couldn't imagine that such stage would be our last stage in Japan. Until now, I feel sad, and also angry" (corrected thanks to Chloe6002)

To them, Tokyo Dome stage was where they stood with only hope in their heart.

Kim Junsu said, "At first, we were so thankful that Avex chose us. I felt happy thinking that it was our new beginning. It was so unimaginable that another obstacle appeared and put an end to our activities in Japan."

Yuchun and Junsu about Jaejoong

"A warm-hearted and humane person." (Park Yuchun)

"A perfectionist at work but number one in taking care of people around him." (Kim Junsu)

That's what Park Yuchun and Kim Junsu, his members who deeply know him, said about Kim Jaejoong. Through the two's mouths, I envied Kim Jaejoong's wide range of human relationships.

Kim Junsu explained, "When we were in Japan, there was a strange man sleeping in our bedroom. I asked who he was. And it turned out that, when Jaejoongie hyung was looking for izakaya [T/N: a type of Japanese drinking establishment which also serves food to accompany the drinks] he saw a man piteously drinking alone in front of an izakaya. So he drank with him and even put him up for the night. It was astonishing but such a thing often happens to Jaejoongie hyung. He's very careful and is a perfectionist when it comes to work, but when drinking, he can be friends with everyone. He's an open person." He (Junsu also said that he admires Kim Jaejoong for the fact that he always takes care of people around him.

"Its not easy to take care of existing friends when you get to know new friends. But, he still manages to take care of all. Sometimes I really wondered whether he had a human clone that helps him send messages to people. Ha ha." (Park Yuchun)

Synergistic Effect from Different Individualities

Kim Jaejoong composed "In Heaven," vitalizing the members' distinct characteristics as the way it is. However, Kim Junsu and Park Yuchun were blown away as "Jaejoongie hyung's song is so hard to sing." Two people couldn't stand still and were even being sulky.

"Because Jaejoongie hyung composed songs at home, he recorded the guide song with a small voice so maybe he didn't know, but the key was really high. It was killing us. Since the key is so high, we (Yuchun and Junsu) told each other to lower it a bit. Then he told us, "Yuchun-ah, Junsu-ah! You can do it!" At his word, we obediently finished the recording. That's our teamwork," Park Yuchun and Kim Junsu said.

"Its a song that we can totally digest well. It has to be a song that the wider public can enjoy. When the song is performed in a concert venue, it must give the audience goose-bumps. If the strength of TVXQ was perfect harmony, I think that JYJ should go after that identity. If Yuchunie and Junsu grumble that 'Hyung's song is so high,' I'll whine. Junsu said, 'My throat wasn't hoarse even if I sang a dozen times on musical stages. But it cracked every time I sang hyung's song.' Ha ha ha! Before we enter the recording room, if I give them compliments, "You guys can totally nail it," then they will be convinced." (Kim Jaejoong)

On Dr. Jin

Although there were many difficulties and burdens, Kim Jaejoong has overcome all with his ability and endeavor. After the end of the drama, he received honorable mentions such as, ‘The rediscovery of Kim Jaejoong,’ and ‘Actor who excellently portrays a star-crossed figure, Kim Kyungtak.’

“When everything started, I also had the same fear. After the drama ended, I knew that the character, Kyungtak, had given me many things. Sometimes, I still re-watch the last episode of Dr.Jin and I still fall for Kyungtak whose tears blankly flowed in that scene. He tried his best to protect people around him. I think we have that point in common. That’s why I really like that guy.”

On Directing Son Yeonjae’s Gala

Other than concerts, Kim Jaejoong had to prepare for the stage of a gala show. He said, “It would have been hard for her because it was not something Yeonjae has been steadily doing. Because dance and gymnastics are totally different. It was the first time that I was so serious about teaching someone something. I’m thankful that Yeonjae followed so well.”

This gala show was also the chance for Jaejoong to be closer to Son Yeonjae. “At the time when I was the director of the show, she used to call me ‘director-nim’ but nowadays, she calls me ‘oppa.’ I watched Infinite Challenge, in which Yeonjae appeared, ‘Oppa’ - ‘Ahjussi’ - “Uncle’ are clearly seperate but I was ‘Oppa’ without constraint. (laugh)”

On Cooking

Kim Jaejoong who is very interested in cooking chose haejangguk [T/N: haejangguk refers to all kinds of guk (soup) eaten as a hangover cure in Korean cuisine] as the menu he can make with full confidence. Its squid soup with radish. “Actually, you just have to buy the ingredients and cook it. Put radish, parsley, groundsel in. Then top it with sliced squid and cook it. I’m also good at making seafood soup and gochujang pasta [T/N: gochujang = red pepper paste]. If I have a chance in the future, I also want to enter the restaurant business.”

JYJ Magazine: The Story of 1000 Days – Park Yuchun: Actor’s Dream Attained at Sungkyunkwan

Park Yuchun, the Actor, slowly took shape because of the August 2010 drama “Sungkyunkwan Scandal”... though fans may have preferred a romantic type of drama that can display Park Yuchun’s tall figure and handsome face.

But Park Yuchun’s first choice was a historical drama. It is not an exaggeration to say that the surrounding sounds of anxiety were overwhelming.

“To have a historical drama as my first work as an actor, even I myself felt it’s overconfident and conceited. I heard many “Can it really be done” voices, so I also considered, “Is it necessary that I must use a historical drama as a start?” After talking with Chang Soo hyung (Chang Ju?), with the words ‘First work, whether it is a historical drama or modern drama, as long as it is a good piece of work, it will be fine’, I found my self-confidence.”

Doing things my way but with all my passion

Slowly walking out, to be correct, what most needs to be done is to prepare. But it is not easy adjusting a state of mind. I spent a lot of effort practising the voice and intonation unique to historical dramas. And to analyse the role, I did thorough self-conducted acting preparation. Recording practices into ipod, listening to it, and then using other intonations to act, I poured in a lot of hard work.

Every person has his own way of analysing things. The director and the people around have many this or that kind of requests towards the acting of the role of Lee Sun Joon. In the end, I abandoned the opinions of others and acted the way that I wanted. When I first started practising, the tone of my voice was too high, later I gradually adjusted it down. I think, at that time, allowing me to act the way I wanted to act was more helpful to me. It is me who is acting; if I did it according to how other people wanted me to act, in the end it would not be mine. This is not the same as accepting help for the inner heart, and is a different problem.

In this way, I shaped this character, Lee Sun Joon.

Through this work, I also filmed my first kiss scene. The scene with actress Park Min Young where our lips gently touched, although a portion of viewers requested for it to be like the original work, with a more intense kiss scene, I analysed that this is already the limit that Lee Sun Joon can show. I also joked that actually Park Yuchun is just like the fans, hoping for a kiss scene that is the same as the original work.

Shooting a kiss scene is similar to a normal shoot. Although there are a lot of crew watching, during the shoot, you will not care about them looking, and you are also not nervous. Before shooting the kiss scene, smelled mint from the other person’s mouth, “Ah! brushed teeth ah ” this degree of feeling? (laughs).
Naturally finished the kiss scene shoot and fortunately not many NGs.

Becoming an actor that works hard and acts well!

Although he did not formally attend acting lessons, the Park Yuchun that grew with each episode of the TV series candidly tore off the “singer-born” label that caused the initial surrounding concerns and worries.

“I’m probably born with it? (laughs) Just joking. I learned acting from my co-actor, senior Kim Ha Kyoon; in 3 weeks, 4 times a week, learned all that is needed for a historical drama. How to differentiate the pronunciation of homonyms “horse” and “words”, how to stand in front of the camera, he taught me many skills in the technical aspect. No other training for vocalisation. This kind of help was very useful, but maybe the experiences I have from starting to work at a young age also became a big help in acting. Using one of those in my acting, my confidence was naturally built up.”

Just as they say ‘Praise can make a whale dance’, the surrounding words of warmth and his own sense of confidence combined to make a successful piece of work. Park Min Young, Song Joong Ki, Yoo Ah In and other co-actors in the drama were also a great help.

“Other than working with my group members, this is the first time on stage with my peers. To have that camaraderie with Park Min Young, Song Joong Ki and Yoo Ah In, it was very fulfilling” he reminisced.

Consequently, at the end of that year, he received the best present– KBS Best Newcomer Acting Award. Although in the past he has swept many awards in the name of a group, the significance of receiving the Best Newcomer Award as an actor is very special.

“I really did not expect it. When my name was called, I was very surprised and very happy, and also thankful. The faces of my parents and the people that worked so hard together all floated to mind. Furthermore, we could perform in the name of JYJ at that awards ceremony, so I was very happy. After the ceremony ended, we all went to eat barbecue beef intestines, really the last night of December that I can never ever forget.”
