Why Park Yoo Chun Won A Third Popularity Award

For someone who started out as an idol singer, Park Yoo Chun has quickly become a respected actor. He recently won his third popularity award at this year's Baeksang Arts Awards. He is the first actor to win the award three years in a row and he can add it to his collection of trophies from all three major Korean television channels.

This year's Baeksang Popularity Award was given for his role in "Missing You," which received a 54.3 percent approval rating. The JYJ singer won the first time for playing in "Sungkyunkwan Scandal" and then again last year for his role in "Miss Ripley."

"I'm thankful for receiving this great award and I will happily act to receive it again next year," said Park, who is considering new roles.

An official at the awards ceremony credited the win to Park's acting skills and his willingness to challenge himself, saying, "We believe the way he matures with every new piece appeals to his viewers."

As an actor, Park is not afraid to take risks and change his image. He jumped straight into acting with a historical drama "Sungkyunkwan Scandal," in which he played a Joseon era scholar. He earned praise for his comic role of the time-traveling prince in "Rooftop Prince," then won an award playing Song Yoo Hyun, a man disappointed in love in "Miss Ripley." But his most challenging role so far was the detective Han Jung Woo in "Missing You."

While filming "Missing You," his co-star, veteran actress Song Ok Sook, said she was surprised he took the part, as it was so different from his previous roles.

"It is a huge risk for an actor to change his image," said Park. "Even if the acting is good, the audience might find the new image unacceptable. But at that time I just wanted others to see a different side of me. I didn't think about it too much."

Part of Park's popularity might also be due to the fact that his likable personality shines through whatever role he plays. There's something kind and gentle about him that fellow actors notice while working together and viewers can relate to.

"His presence is very different," said Yoon Eun Hye, who worked with him in "Missing You." "He's considerate of other people and puts others' needs before his own. Even on set, he's cheerful and constantly sets the mood."

That must have been hard in such a heartbreaking melodrama. But Park says he tends to be pretty upbeat.

"I am actually a very cheerful person," said Park. "Especially when the weather is good, I am even more cheerful. On a beautiful sunny day, riding in my car, I am quite blissful."

And winning three popularity awards can't help but improve his mood even further.

JYJ Magazine: The Story of 1000 Days – Park Yuchun: Actor’s Dream Attained at Sungkyunkwan

Park Yuchun, the Actor, slowly took shape because of the August 2010 drama “Sungkyunkwan Scandal”... though fans may have preferred a romantic type of drama that can display Park Yuchun’s tall figure and handsome face.

But Park Yuchun’s first choice was a historical drama. It is not an exaggeration to say that the surrounding sounds of anxiety were overwhelming.

“To have a historical drama as my first work as an actor, even I myself felt it’s overconfident and conceited. I heard many “Can it really be done” voices, so I also considered, “Is it necessary that I must use a historical drama as a start?” After talking with Chang Soo hyung (Chang Ju?), with the words ‘First work, whether it is a historical drama or modern drama, as long as it is a good piece of work, it will be fine’, I found my self-confidence.”

Doing things my way but with all my passion

Slowly walking out, to be correct, what most needs to be done is to prepare. But it is not easy adjusting a state of mind. I spent a lot of effort practising the voice and intonation unique to historical dramas. And to analyse the role, I did thorough self-conducted acting preparation. Recording practices into ipod, listening to it, and then using other intonations to act, I poured in a lot of hard work.

Every person has his own way of analysing things. The director and the people around have many this or that kind of requests towards the acting of the role of Lee Sun Joon. In the end, I abandoned the opinions of others and acted the way that I wanted. When I first started practising, the tone of my voice was too high, later I gradually adjusted it down. I think, at that time, allowing me to act the way I wanted to act was more helpful to me. It is me who is acting; if I did it according to how other people wanted me to act, in the end it would not be mine. This is not the same as accepting help for the inner heart, and is a different problem.

In this way, I shaped this character, Lee Sun Joon.

Through this work, I also filmed my first kiss scene. The scene with actress Park Min Young where our lips gently touched, although a portion of viewers requested for it to be like the original work, with a more intense kiss scene, I analysed that this is already the limit that Lee Sun Joon can show. I also joked that actually Park Yuchun is just like the fans, hoping for a kiss scene that is the same as the original work.

Shooting a kiss scene is similar to a normal shoot. Although there are a lot of crew watching, during the shoot, you will not care about them looking, and you are also not nervous. Before shooting the kiss scene, smelled mint from the other person’s mouth, “Ah! brushed teeth ah ” this degree of feeling? (laughs).
Naturally finished the kiss scene shoot and fortunately not many NGs.

Becoming an actor that works hard and acts well!

Although he did not formally attend acting lessons, the Park Yuchun that grew with each episode of the TV series candidly tore off the “singer-born” label that caused the initial surrounding concerns and worries.

“I’m probably born with it? (laughs) Just joking. I learned acting from my co-actor, senior Kim Ha Kyoon; in 3 weeks, 4 times a week, learned all that is needed for a historical drama. How to differentiate the pronunciation of homonyms “horse” and “words”, how to stand in front of the camera, he taught me many skills in the technical aspect. No other training for vocalisation. This kind of help was very useful, but maybe the experiences I have from starting to work at a young age also became a big help in acting. Using one of those in my acting, my confidence was naturally built up.”

Just as they say ‘Praise can make a whale dance’, the surrounding words of warmth and his own sense of confidence combined to make a successful piece of work. Park Min Young, Song Joong Ki, Yoo Ah In and other co-actors in the drama were also a great help.

“Other than working with my group members, this is the first time on stage with my peers. To have that camaraderie with Park Min Young, Song Joong Ki and Yoo Ah In, it was very fulfilling” he reminisced.

Consequently, at the end of that year, he received the best present– KBS Best Newcomer Acting Award. Although in the past he has swept many awards in the name of a group, the significance of receiving the Best Newcomer Award as an actor is very special.

“I really did not expect it. When my name was called, I was very surprised and very happy, and also thankful. The faces of my parents and the people that worked so hard together all floated to mind. Furthermore, we could perform in the name of JYJ at that awards ceremony, so I was very happy. After the ceremony ended, we all went to eat barbecue beef intestines, really the last night of December that I can never ever forget.”

130124 “Donation Culture” of Kim Junsu and his Fans, Just as Amazing as Receiving 2 Golden Ticket Awards

Kim Junsu and his fans’ donation work is just as amazing as him becoming the double award winner of the Golden Ticket Awards

Kim Junsu of JYJ has become a double award winner of the Eighth Golden Ticket Awards. Even though idol singers trying out musicals have become some sort of a trend, Junsu is unique in a sense that no one else has been as active and successful as him. An important fact here is that his receiving two awards is not a mere act of fan service to please his idol fandom.

What is interesting about the Golden Ticket Awards is that this award is to celebrate ticket power. It is an award that shows true worthiness of successful musicals in a sense that the awards are given to so-called money-generating musicals. It is interesting to see that Kim Junsu received two very specialized awards such as Male Musical Actor and Concert Musician.

JYJ Kim Junsu’s worth that dominates the musical market is simply amazing.

The Golden Ticket Awards is rather interesting because it celebrates the persons with the most ticket power on the stage. [Getting this award] is a great accomplishment because it chooses the persons that are truly vouched for and recognized by producers.

Kim Junsu received the Popularity Award and the Best Male Lead award in 2012’s Korean Musical Awards. He really is a musical star that possesses both popularity and capabilities. A fandom may be able to work hard so that a musical actor can receive the Popularity Award. However, the Best Male Lead Award cannot be influenced by fans in that fashion. Receiving the Best Male Lead Award means that the actor has truly exhibited excellent talent as a musical actor.

Interpark, a ticket selling and distribution company, recently announced winners for the Golden Ticket Awards after they processed relevant information such as the number of tickets sold, additional points based on ranking, and on-line polls. Kim JunSu took the first place in both Musical (Male Actor) and Concert.

Kim Junsu who played the lead role of Tod in Musical ‘Elisabeth’ showed strong ticket power through his solo concerts as well as ‘Xia Ballad & Musical Concert’ that was held for 3 days at the end of December. It is only natural that he took two awards in a sense that he boasted unmatched presence in terms of ticket power.

“Kim JunSu receiving Musical Award in the Golden Ticket Award after he received the Best Male Lead Award [in the Korean Musical Awards] is evidence that he is sincere about musicals as well as possesses high box-office values.”

“It’s surprising that an idol singer took the first place in Musical. Kim JunSu proved that he is much loved by audiences of all ages.”

It was natural that compliments poured in when he received an award for ticket power on top of the Best Male Lead award. There is a saying that goes “grasshoppers only last for a season” [T/N: popularity or something/something’s dominance in one area is fleeting]. There are people who only consider musicals a quick business to generate income. There are idol singers that plunge into musicals using their popularity.

The Idol singers’ advance into musicals seems to be a win-win business strategy between idols [and the musical industry]. Idols’ appearances in musicals have always been the target of criticisms because idols singers in musicals, rather than securing their place as sincere musical actors, were more about boosting ticket sales [using their popularity].

Unlike idols who considered musicals as dabbling into musicals and leaving their marks in the industry, Kim JunSu secured his place as a true star actor in the musical market. The fact that Kim JunSu proved his value as a true musical star, not just a mean to sell more tickets, confirms once again that he should not be called a mere idol singer.

“I really received so much love this past year. I thank my fans that cheered for me every time I stood on the stage.”

“I hope the audience that was with me while I was on the stage felt happy and gained happy memories. I think the best way to repay their love for my performances and music is doing my best and performing well on the stage.” The Eighth Golden Ticket Awards double awards winner Kim JunSu did not forget to thank his fans who always supported him.

Some criticized that it was unfair for people who did musicals their whole lives. Their logic is that it does not make sense that all kinds of awards, almost impossible to receive even after doing musicals the whole life, were given to Kim JunSu who debuted only a couple of years ago.

If [an actor] has no talent and skills and still receives an award, he deserves criticism. The fact that these awards that even musical actors with long careers cannot receive were awarded to Kim JunSu means that he has that much of talent and he does his best.

What is even more interesting and meaningful than Kim JunSu receiving awards is this “donation culture”. His fans are also part of it. By donating all the gifts that poured in from all over the world for his solo concerts and musicals, he showed his quality as a star that act together with his fans.

Rice wreaths that his fans sent Kim JunSu were sent to the underprivileged such as children who cannot afford to bring lunch to school. 2,000 briquettes that 20 families can use for one month were sent to underprivileged senior citizens who live by themselves that use briquettes but cannot afford to buy them. 6,000 egg wreaths were donated to food banks nationwide to relieve malnutrition problems among the underprivileged such as children who live by themselves without parents and senior citizens who live by themselves.

It is a beautiful thing that a star and fans come together to share what they have with their neighbors in need of help. Kim JunSu who was recognized as a talented musical actor. Kim JunSu who proved his top worth through awards that celebrate ticket power. Kim JunSu is a true star with both talent and skills.

And his fans that makes their star even more special by actively participating in charity work makes everyone around them happy. Kim JunSu and his fans’ charity work feels even more amazing than Kim JunSu becoming a double award winner. And maybe it is because Kim JunSu and his fans seem to have beautiful souls that help the less fortunate neighbors around them.
